A Simple Yet Impactful Fall Revival
We’re entering one of the loveliest yet challenging seasons of the year. The cider overflows and the kids are on an endless sugar high that keeps them entertained. But what about you? While they’re running around, you’re in the background with a lunchbox in one hand and a dirty dish in the other. Your house has started to feel more like a playpen than a home.
September is the perfect opportunity to bring joy back into your spaces, even amidst the chaos of back to school routines. You can find comfort in warm textures, softer lighting, and subtle layers.
Your home can still feel inviting and functional while you save up for that renovation you’ve been dreaming of. We’re here to guide you through the transition from a disorganized habitat to a stylish, family-friendly environment.
Layering That Lasts All Season
When the seasons change, we change with them. It’s not just about redecorating, though. It’s about creating depth and balance that allows your home to feel like a home. It’s special, like the flavors and scents that only come around once a year. Your home can reflect that same excitement and variety.
Texture and Depth
Fabrics are an easy way to bring a fresh attitude to your home. When you lean into texture rather than bold colors and countless decorations, you create impact. The sophistication of those subtle changes leads to a timeless feel that becomes intentional instead of haphazard.
Here are some ways you can restyle your home with texture:
Living Room
Lighter summer fabrics, such as linen, can easily be swapped for more lavish textures. For example: chunky woven throw blankets, bouclé ottomans, and velvet pillows. Consider subdued patterns and tonal variations of the same color, as opposed to stark contrast or bold prints.
Colors such as olive, soft plum, navy, or burnt orange to allow a more seasonal feel without going overboard.
Dining Room
Your table may have been bare this summer for cookouts or parties, but it’s time to bring a festive feel to the dining room with a new runner. Lay down a linen, wool, or even a textured fabric. Consider patterns such as plaid, stripes, and even a small herringbone.
Pair your new runner with napkins that feel like fall, but can be used year round. Examples can be linen napkins in complimentary earthy tones, like olive or indigo. This lays the foundation for an impressive culinary display when the family gathers!
Bedrooms
Once the weather turns chilly, it’s time to pull out thicker blankets to pack in the heat. We suggest adding quilts, lightweight cashmere, or even wool throw blankets folded at the end of the bed. Allow your most sacred space to embrace these cozy layers and rejuvenate your nights with ease.
Anne’s Note: Contrast is key. If your couch or bedding is neutral, use darker, earth-toned accents to add opulence and depth. If the room already leans into warmer tones, balance it with ones that are lighter like cream or oatmeal. This prevents it from feeling too heavy and ruining the intended feel for the space!
Switching Up Lighting
In interior design, it is often forgotten how powerful the right lighting can be. Lighting doesn’t just help you see better–though that’s a huge benefit. It shapes the mood of a room, from bright and energizing to soft and calm. Simply swapping out a bulb or adding a single lamp can dramatically shift how your home feels. There’s beauty in these updates, allowing for a new perspective in either high or low lighting to see the room in a new way.
Fast and Easy Swaps with Maximal Impact:
Table Lamps: Overhead lighting can feel harsh in the evenings, especially during fall when the days are shorter and you want your home to feel more restful. Adding table lamps, especially with linen shades, creates gentler lighting, making it easier on the eyes and helps transition your family from a hectic day to a serene evening.
Dining Room: Chandeliers and pendants change the atmosphere of a meal. Swapping a glass summer shade for one made of linen, frosted glass, or even a textured glass can diffuse light across the table. This creates a warm, flattering glow that encourages everyone to linger a little longer at dinner. The drinks continue to flow and so does the conversation.
Outdoor Spaces: Don’t forget the exterior! Enjoy a crisp fall evening with café lights strung across a patio or lanterns tucked into your far corners. Layered outdoor lighting not only makes the space functional but also creates a cozy atmosphere you’ll want to use throughout the season and well after.
Why It Matters:
Lighting isn’t just practical—it’s emotional. Warm, layered lighting supports the feeling of peace and connection that we crave in our homes. Updating lighting is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to transform how you experience each room daily.
Anne’s Note: Using rechargeable bulbs in light fixtures avoids the hassle of rewiring. It’s a special trick of mine, especially since they’ve evolved in both design and quality. A plus is that they let you place the lighting exactly where you need it without having to open your walls. This simple swap gives you flexibility and saves time. That way, your home stays feeling seamless and uncluttered.
When you plan for your future renovation, also consider dimmer switches. For an easy upgrade, install dimmers on fixtures like dining chandeliers, kitchen pendants, or living room overheads. This gives you instant control over brightness—bright in the afternoon for homework and low for family movie nights. This small change ends up making a huge impact, allowing flexibility for each room to enjoy the perfect moment!
Rotating Decor
In order to feel refreshed, you don’t have to overwhelm your home. Here’s some other ways you can implement subtle changes with lasting impact:
Rotating Art: Swap your usual prints with photography or art with deeper hues to complement the season.
Anne’s Note: This is one of my favorite tricks, and very few people actually rotate their art! It makes the biggest difference to your space, and gives you a fresh perspective every season. I have cocktail and citrus inspired art during the summer. For the fall, I put up imagery of dark red roses and pinecones.
Entryway Revival: Switch to a textured, but durable rug runner that feels both cozy and sturdy enough for your boots and muddy paw prints.
Anne’s Note: I really love washable rugs for these spaces. While they’re not typically plush enough for a bedroom or living area, your entryway is the perfect place for a more flatwoven and machine-washable rug.
Scent & Sound: A subtle fall candle makes a room feel completely transformed. Opt for warm, grounding scents like cedar, amber, or chai spice. Or try your hand with a bolder scent like apple cinnamon. Now you’ve been transported to a wonderful getaway without moving a single piece of furniture!
Foliage: Trade summer sprouts for branches, eucalyptus, or dried arrangements for a touch of natural warmth. Not only do they bring seasonal color into your space, but they also last much longer than fresh flowers, making them practical. We all need a touch of low-maintenance elegance every once in a while.
Autumn is promised to be slower and kinder. Rarely is this the case. We’re bogged down by busy schedules and fewer chances to catch our breaths. Together, these small updates create a space that feels grounded while also layering warmth, texture, and comfort into your home. Now you’re perfectly attuned to the season and can head into the thick of it with a bright, clear mindset–and more time to think through that renovation you’ve been wanting.
